Where Can You Find the Cheapest Weed in the World

A study conducted by marijuana technology company Seedo has identified the cities worldwide with the highest marijuana consumption and where weed is the most affordable.

Ranking first in the United States for marijuana consumption is New York City, with an impressive 77.44 metric tons consumed annually.

Titled the “2018 Cannabis Price Index,” Seedo’s study examines factors such as marijuana’s legal status, potential tax revenue if taxed like cigarettes, and potential tax revenue if taxed at the average rate for U.S. marijuana taxes in legal states like Washington. The study encompasses 120 international cities.

As expected, the most affordable weed worldwide is found in countries with legal or relaxed marijuana laws. The top spot for the cheapest weed belongs to the mountainous city of Quito, Ecuador, where marijuana consumption is legal, and citizens can possess up to 10 grams. In Quito, residents can purchase marijuana for as little as $1.34 USD per gram. Bogotá, Colombia comes in second place, with a price of $2.20 per gram, which isn’t surprising considering the decriminalization of marijuana cultivation and personal consumption in the country.

In stark contrast, Singapore, where marijuana possession can result in the death penalty, consumes only 0.02 metric tons of marijuana annually. Tokyo ranks as the most expensive city to buy weed, with a staggering price of $32.66 per gram. The list contains many other cities with varying prices and legal statuses.

Top 5 Cheapest Weed Destinations:

Where Can You Find the Cheapest Weed in the World
  1. Quito, Ecuador – The crown jewel of affordable cannabis, Quito offers weed at a jaw-dropping $1.34 per gram. This vibrant city is not only a haven for cannabis enthusiasts but also a gateway to the mesmerizing Galapagos Islands and the majestic Machu Picchu in Peru.

  1. Bogotá, Colombia – A must-visit for travel and weed lovers alike, Bogotá boasts a thriving cannabis scene with gourmet edibles, head shops, and an annual cannabis festival. You can score a gram for just $2.20 in this colorful metropolis.

  1. Asunción, Paraguay – This hidden gem in Latin America mixes tradition with trendiness, offering a captivating blend of indigenous-inspired murals and chic cafes. Find a gram for as low as $2.22 but be prepared for varying quality.

  1. Jakarta, Indonesia – While a gram in Jakarta goes for $3.79, smoking weed in Indonesia is highly discouraged due to strict laws and the risk of arrest. If you must indulge, do so cautiously and far away from major cities.

  1. Panama City, Panama – Despite ongoing debates on medical marijuana legalization, recreational use remains illegal. Locals’ opinions on the risk vary, but a gram costs just $3.85. Exercise caution and discretion when indulging.

Cheapest Weed in the U.S.

The most affordable weed in the U.S. can currently be found in Portland, with grams priced as low as $4 or $5. Oregon has faced a massive surplus issue since legalizing recreational weed in 2014. As of April 2018, the state had over 1 million pounds of unsold flower. Seattle experiences a similar surplus problem, with grams priced at $7.58. Denver comes in just behind Seattle at $7.79 per gram, and Los Angeles at $8.14. Thankfully, all of these incredible cities have legalized recreational weed for adults aged 21 and up.

According to an analysis by WikiLeaf, which tracks dispensary prices across the country, the West Coast has 22.5 percent cheaper weed than the East Coast. The average price of an eighth on the West Coast is $36—$10 cheaper than the East Coast, where an eighth costs an average of around $46.

This price difference is consistent across all measurements, from a gram to an ounce. The largest gap is a 25 percent price difference in the average gram, which costs $16 on the East Coast and $10 on the West Coast.

WikiLeaf’s city-by-city analysis helps identify the cheapest weed within each region, although the quality of the flower cannot be determined. Portland, Oregon has the cheapest eighth at just $30, while Baltimore, Maryland has the highest-priced eighth at $53.70.

It’s important to note that not all the states and cities analyzed have fully legalized adult-use cannabis, which WikiLeaf cites as one possible reason for the price difference. Local tax differences and varying costs of living also contribute to the price disparity. For instance, legal weed in San Francisco is more expensive than in San Diego due to differences in local tax rates and a higher cost of living in the Bay Area.

Another factor contributing to the price difference between the West and East Coasts is the federal illegality of cannabis, which prohibits states from exporting their products out of state. In some cases, like Oregon and Washington, the price of cannabis has dropped dramatically—down to $4 a gram in some dispensaries—because growers in these states have produced more cannabis than the state can consume.

Top 5 Most Expensive Cities to Light Up:

Where Can You Find the Cheapest Weed in the World
  1. Tokyo, Japan – Be prepared to pay over $30 for a single gram in Tokyo—if you can even find it. Strict cannabis laws make enjoying weed in this bustling city a risky endeavor, but the city’s enchanting charm offers plenty of sober adventures.

  1. Seoul, South Korea – With grams at $32.44, Seoul’s strict laws mean you could be arrested not only for possession but also for consumption—even if you partake legally elsewhere. Stay on the right side of the law and enjoy the city’s rich culture.

  1. Kyoto, Japan – Kyoto’s cannabis prices come in just under Tokyo’s at $29.65 per gram. As in Tokyo, it’s best to avoid cannabis entirely and immerse yourself in the city’s captivating history and beauty.

  1. Hong Kong, China – Despite its $27.48 per gram price tag, it’s best not to smoke in Hong Kong due to legal ramifications. While the risk of arrest is lower than in some other cities, it’s still not worth tempting fate.

  1. Bangkok, Thailand – A city famous for its nightlife, Bangkok tempts many with its $24.81 per gram price. However, undercover police pose a significant risk. To enjoy cannabis in Thailand, head to remote islands or the northern hippie enclave of Pai.

Pack your bags and embark on a global cannabis adventure! Discover the cheapest weed destinations and experience each city’s unique charm, but remember always to respect local laws and stay safe.
