A Guide To THC Potencies: Which One Is The Strongest?

Which one is the most powerful of all the new cousins of our beloved THC? Created with Binoid.

It used to be that potency was the only factor you had an eye out for when heading to your dealer to fill up your stash with some fresh-picked weed. How much can I have and for how much money can I have it for, would be the only other two things you’d have on your mind.

Other than that:

Terpenes, other cannabinoid content, even flavor and scent would not even cross our minds.

But now:

There are tons of features to look out for other than simple potency and price. Freshness, type of strain, and overall cannabinoid content are just some of the ones that have gained the most interest from the public.

But most recently, the cannabis industry has been slowly led towards the development of innovative hemp-derived products like those that Binoid has to offer.

What Is Hemp?

Hemp is a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis with a high CBD and a low Delta 9 THC content. Because of its non-psychoactive nature, hemp has been deemed federally legal since 2018.

This has brought the attention of the entire cannabis industry to hemp. A legal crop that companies are allowed to grow, harvest, and develop LEGAL products from as long as they do not surpass the 0.3% Delta 9 THC content limit.

This has procured a spike in the number of different products that are made from hemp extract. Because the plant is still cannabis, it happens to be that several other cannabinoids can be found within it.

This includes multiple types of THCs that are not of the highly regulated Delta 9 variety.

We’re specifically speaking about Delta 8, Delta 10, and THC-O, a synthetic type of THC.

While scientists have the tools and knowledge to easily tell one compound from another, it’s still very difficult for us to put a finger on exactly how that chemical difference shows in the effects that each of those cannabinoids provides. More specifically, how much more potent is one cannabinoid when compared to the next?

Nevertheless:

We’ve decided to give it a whirl and found that it is much easier to spot the potency difference when we compare it to effects with which we’re all familiar. In this case, we’re talking about our beloved Delta 9 THC.

Here’s what we found:

Delta 8 Potency

Delta 8 THC binds to the same endocannabinoid receptors as Delta 9 does within the body. Consequently, it makes you feel ‘high’.

Chemically, both compounds are extremely similar, except for the fact that D8 has a double bond on its eighth carbon atom. Delta 9 has this double bond on the 9th atom. Hence their names.

Because of this minor difference, both cannabinoids bind to the receptors in slightly different ways. It is believed that this makes Delta 8 a less potent cannabinoid than D9 or ‘regular’ THC.

It has also been said that the high of D8 allows the user to feel more mentally agile than say the often sedating effects that D9 can produce.

Delta 10 Potency

Delta 10 THC is a bit harder to come across than Delta 8 THC is. Delta 10 is much more scarce than D8, and you don’t see it as much as D8 because of the extensive refinement that needs to be done to market it as a concentrate.

Delta 10 is a powerful psychoactive agent, but it is still less potent than Delta 9 THC. However, this report is solely based on anecdotal evidence, and the energizing effects that D10 has over D8 is not a confirmed fact rather than it is n opinion.

If we had to get more specific, we would say that Delta 10 is more of a daytime cannabinoid, while D8 is more amenable for evening consumption.

THC-O Potency

THC-O is a synthetic cannabinoid that has been described to be almost three times as potent as D9 and five times as potent as D8, THC-O has also been associated with psychedelic visual effects and a heady high that can become incapacitating if you do not know how to pace yourself.

Because of its synthetic nature, THC-O is metabolized by your liver first and is significantly more bioavailable than its non-synthetic, or non-acetylated version.

But the greater bioavailability does not necessarily mean a faster onset, on the contrary, most people find THC-O to deliver its effects more slowly.
