Welcome to the future.
I never got around to signing the contract that binds my body and soul to two cups of coffee in the morning. Abstaining, I draw my energy from the universe around me and a fistful of morning jelly beans. But for some New York City residents who need their caffeine fix, there’s one cafe that’ll give you two types of buzz. Bushwick’s Caffeine Underground will now serve you up a cuppa cannabis-infused coffee. And even though recreational cannabis is not legalized in the state, these beverages float above the level.
It all began a month ago when infused weed enthusiast Leighton Knowles came into Caffeine Underground and ended up chatting up owner Ian Ford. Knowles asked Ford if he’d like to carry his brand of Flower Power Coffee, CBD-infused blends, and Caffeine Underground became the first in the city that never sleeps to serve caffeinated cups of cannabis.
“This place is magic,” Ford told Bushwick Daily about his shop. “It attracts these weird people at the right time for the right thing.”
Redefining ‘coffee shop,’ Caffeine Underground’s baristas have packets of Flower Power that they can add to a requested drink. The cafe opened up last summer and swiftly made a reputation for itself as being on top of health trends, such as charcoal.
“When someone comes up and [they] are not sure what they want,” said Ford, “we’re able to help them decide on something that’s going to help their day. We want people leaving here feeling better than [when] they came in. The CBD is a wonderful tool in our arsenal.”
Caffeine Underground’s weed brews contain CBD, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. It’s said to increase focus and decrease anxiety without the high. A new, elevated kind of wired.
