Give a round of applause to the hard-working budtenders.

In celebration of the first-ever International Budtender Day, Leafly launched a budtenders only giveaway to pay homage to the hard-working budtenders that make the cannabis industry go round.

Internation Budtender Day was on Oct. 20, the last day to sign up for Leafly’s giveaway. The new holiday will celebrate and acknowledge the effort put into budtending and recognize how essential this role is for the ever-growing cannabis industry worldwide.

Winners were selected on Oct. 21 to receive one of the many prizes, including one $2,500 scholarship to Oaksterdam University (the first cannabis college and a leader in cannabis education and certification), nine budtender certification courses at Oaksterdam University, and 500 Leafly Budtender Exclusive Swag Packs.

“Budtenders are at the forefront of cannabis, and they do their jobs in an industry ignored and uncounted at the federal level and often in the face of lingering stigma from prohibition,” explained Laura Moriarity, SVP of Marketing and Communications at Leafly to Business Wire.

“In the early days of the COVID crisis, budtenders continued to serve their communities, showing up as the backbone of America’s newest essential industry. As cannabis legalization in America and Canada spreads worldwide, we at Leafly want to establish a holiday that honors these essential workers in recognition of the skills, knowledge, and service they provide to cannabis customers every day.”

While we celebrate our shared love and appreciation for cannabis on Apr. 20, “Oct. 20 is about celebrating the power of budtenders to provide customers the knowledge and products they need to discover the benefits of cannabis,” she concluded.

The giveaway allowed those from the United States and Canada to sign up for a shot at winning a prize. The submission process encouraged budtenders to submit a brief yet unique statement about how budtending has positively impacted their lives.

To promote the contest and International Budtender Day, Leafly dropped a set of Instagram GIF stickers for users and followers to celebrate the first budtender holiday socially. Next year, don’t forget to use the hashtag #Leafy1020 when International Budtender Day rolls around again.

Not a budtender but intrigued by the position? Here’s a quick guide to how you can become a legal budtender in just seven days. These positions are relatively easy to attain and urgently needed, mainly since budtenders don’t usually stick around at their jobs due to the majority being college students who need to go back to school. So it goes without saying that long-term budtenders are needed now more than ever.
