Uber's second attempt at merging with the cannabis industry is an exciting one.
As of today, Torontonians don’t have to budge for weed. That is, if they have the UberEats app.
UberEats just announced that it’s partnering with Leafly to provide consumers with cannabis ordering and delivery through its application. Consumers can choose to order from the following three Toronto dispensaries:
UberEats’ partnership with Leafly is the first time cannabis delivery will be available on any third-party platform worldwide. Interestingly, although cannabis has been legal for four years in Canada (as of today), the new partnership was designed to help combat the illicit market and decrease the number of high drivers on the road.
To order cannabis from UberEats, customers must be of legal age (19+), and drivers will verify their age and sobriety upon delivery. Ordering it is quite simple, as there will soon be a designated “Cannabis” section for delivery and pick-up.
All three retailers above will have CannSell-certified delivery staff to make these deliveries to cannabis consumers. That means regular UberEats drivers will not be permitted to deliver cannabis orders, only the staff from the dispensary it was from.
This isn’t the first time UberEats considered expanding into cannabis. Last November, the platform announced its partnership with cannabis retailer Tokyo Smoke, which lets consumers place orders with the dispensary through the UberEats app.
However, Tokyo Smoke dispensaries or UberEats staff did not deliver these orders, and pick-up was the only available option until now. That said, Tokyo Smoke still does not have a delivery function on UberEats, only the three above dispensaries.
UberEats also delivers liquor, and the company has been looking to expand operations into cannabis for quite some time. Now that Canada is four years into the legal recreational cannabis market, the country is still attempting to efface the illegal weed market, which makes up a large portion of total annual sales.
The new announcement for cannabis delivery on UberEats was designed to help combat the illicit market and reduce the number of high drivers on the road. Although these delivery options are only available in the Downtown/North York region, we can only assume this is the first cannabis-centric announcement of many.
